Edwin Barker is one of the outstanding virtuosi on the instrument and is frequently asked to perform as soloist and master class lecturer in the United States and abroad. He has been Principal Bass in the Boston Symphony Orchestra for eighteen years. He has frequently performed as soloist and chamber musician with world-class ensembles such as the Boston Symphony Chamber Players and the Juilliard String Quartet. Three Sonatas for Double Bass will be the first of many recordings of his legacy.
Edwin Barker has been highly praised by the Boston Globe for his interpretation of Schubert's "Arpeggione" Sonata. The Boston Globe has said of his artistry, "Not only does Edwin Barker have what it takes to lead the Boston Symphony's double bass section in a solo capacity, he can make the famously unwieldly instrument bearable, plausible, nay, downright compelling... What class!"
"...Barker was outstanding... the difficulties of (Schubert's "Arpeggione" Sonata) on this instrument are prodigious, but Barker's easy virtuosity made light of the difficulties, and his sound has a core that drives the clouds away."
Richard Dyer, Boston Globe.
